How Often Should You Water Your Garden?

Watering your garden may seem straightforward, but getting it right can make a significant difference to the health and appearance of your plants. The amount of water your garden needs depends on several factors, including the weather, soil type, plant variety and time of year.

During warm summer months, most gardens benefit from a deep watering one or two times per week rather than a light daily sprinkle. Deep watering encourages roots to grow further into the soil, helping plants become stronger and more drought-resistant. In cooler spring and autumn weather, less frequent watering is usually required, while winter rainfall often provides enough moisture for established plants.

Newly planted flowers, shrubs and vegetables generally need more attention. Their root systems are still developing, so regular watering is essential during the first few weeks after planting. Once established, many plants can thrive with less frequent watering.

Containers, hanging baskets and greenhouse plants dry out much faster than plants growing in the ground. During hot weather, they may require watering every day, and sometimes even twice daily during particularly warm periods. Checking the soil regularly is the best way to determine whether your plants need water. If the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, it’s usually time to water.

The best time to water your garden is early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. This reduces evaporation and allows plants to absorb more moisture before the heat of the day.

It’s also important to avoid overwatering. Yellowing leaves, soggy soil and poor growth can all be signs that plants are receiving too much water. By monitoring your plants and adjusting your watering routine according to weather conditions, you can help create a healthy, thriving garden throughout the year.

Using a quality watering can makes it easier to deliver water exactly where it is needed, helping to reduce waste and keep your plants looking their best.
